If you just casually looked at the family picture below, you would probably think it was a nice family portrait of an average family. But, it is so much more. It is a portrait of one of the most courageous families I know – one that I am honored to know, and be able to call my friend.
Their middle son Tyler has been battling Leukemia for the past 4 years. He underwent treatment for 3 years, but two months after that, his family received the heartbreaking news that he had relapsed and he now faces another 26 months of much more difficult treatment.
I can’t even begin to imagine how you deal with this as a parent – watching your child deal with such suffering. I know what their answer would be though…”you don’t have a choice; you just have to keep on going and do what it takes.” I know this because I too was on the other end of the ugly cancer word. I too struggled with chemo drugs, hair loss, sickness and a multitude of other problems. I remember people telling me I was so brave, or that I inspired them. I would just smile in response, but inside I was thinking “What are they talking about? I’m not brave – I didn’t have a choice in this. I’m just doing what I have to do to get through it!”
As I see this family continue to go through this incredibly difficult time – I think I know what people were referring to now. We aren’t amazed that the person/family has to go through this difficult time. Instead, it is the strength, courage and grace in which they do it that inspires us. And, this family is the embodiment of all those things, a true blessing to everyone around them.
